Preliminary English Test (PET) and Preliminary English Test for Schools (PET fS)

The certificate given on the Preliminary English Test (PET) exam is accepted all over the world as an indicator corresponding to the B1 (Intermediate) level of the English language on the CEFR scale. This certificate is accepted as an appropriate language indicator for Tier 2 (employee) and Tier 4 (student) visas in the UK. The PET exam is intended for candidates over 16 years of age.

PET for Schools is a version of the PET exam intended for school students over the age of 12. Although the level of difficulty of this version is the same as the PET exam, the topics covered are suitable for the interest of 12-17 year old students. The following facts about the structure of the exam, the exam results and the obtained certificate remain unchanged.

Passing the PET exam means that you:

You clearly understand informative texts;
You can communicate in many everyday situations that you may encounter in English-speaking countries;
You can ask relatively complex structured questions and answer similar questions;
You can write medium-sized articles on topics you are familiar with.
The structure of the PET exam

The PET (Preliminary English Test) exam consists of 3 parts:

Reading and writing – 1 hour 30 minutes
It tests how well you understand written texts on various topics and your ability to express your ideas in written form.

Listening - about 30 minutes
It tests how well you understand oral speech on a variety of topics.

Conversation – 10-12 minutes
It tests your communication skills by asking questions about everyday topics and answering similar questions. Two students participate in the speaking exam at the same time. This allows the exam to be closer to the real situation and a more objective assessment of your speaking skills.

PET exam results

Distinction (Distinction) - in some cases, the language level of students taking the PET exam is higher than the B1 (Intermediate) level required for the exam. In this case, they are given a Distinction certificate, and the certificate indicates the student's English language level B2 (Upper-intermediate).
Merit (Intermediate) and Pass (Acceptable) - In most cases, students who take the PET exam have a language level of B1 (Intermediate) and they are given a certificate of Merit (Intermediate) or Pass (Acceptable) according to the result of the exam.
